GSM (Global System for Mobile communication): The Basics

GSM is the digital mobile phone network that is used throughout Europe and in most other areas around the world. GSM can provide for voice-mail (answer phone service), faxing, SMS and high-speed data transfer (WAP) as well as for talk..

GPRS (General Packet Radio System): The Basics

GPRS is a technology that does not replace GSM, but uses the GSM network to allow data to be sent/received at higher speeds.
Further, the technology (without going into the science) allows you to pay only for the time that the information takes to send/receive. This payment method is only valid for the use of WAP (see below) and does not apply when talking.
The advantages of GPRS are further highlighted in the next section.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)

WAP is a technology designed to allow Internet material (web pages, e-mail, etc) to be viewed on mobile phones. WAP browsers on the phone display text-only versions of web pages as images have to be removed due to the limited bandwidth that the network currently has to offer. GSM offers speeds of around 9.6Kbps but the new GPRS has allowed speeds of around 20-24Kbps. The older WAP phones will still use the original GSM network but the new WAP phones that you see available today will use GPRS. GSM phones have to go through the slow log-in processes when using WAP, but GPRS provides a continuous connection for the day once logged in.

As said before, GPRS will allow web pages to be read without the worry of cost because the time used to download the information is the only chargeable period for using WAP (Important: talk time rates will be independently charged): GSM charges for the total time connected. The information that can be viewed by WAP mobile phones is currently limited to news, finance, directories, travel, shopping, sport and e-mail (detailed later) but can be extremely useful. Although GPRS has expanded the capabilities of WAP such as faxing and e-mailing, the next generation technology will make a huge difference to how we will interact between mobile phones and the Internet.

Eye Spy

Eye-recognition technology has been a common, almost cliched, feature of science fiction and spy movies for decades. A computer recognizes a user’s unique “eye print,” then opens secret files, a safe door, or access to a devastating weapon.
Until recently, however, eye recognition hasn’t been a practical consumer application. Rather, it’s been both expensive and esoteric, a situation the right partnerships are starting to change, Tobii CEO Henrik Eskilsson explained.

“More than anything else, the Tobii laptop prototype is proof that our eye-tracking technology is mature enough to be used in standard computer interfaces,” said Eskilsson. “To reach a state where the technology is part of the average computer, we need to make it smaller and cheaper. We believe that this can be realized in a couple of years by partnering with the right manufacturer.”

The Tobii-Lenovo partnership is rolling out 20 eye-controlled laptops, split evenly between the two firms for development and demo purposes, Hyleen told TechNewsWorld.
The next step involves stepping back and watching — as consumers watch their monitors.
“We anticipate people will be extremely excited to be able to control their computer with their eyes,” Tobii’s Barclay explained.

For people already used to staring at a computer screen all day, controlling the action with those same two eyes may be more headache than head rush, however. Technology public relations specialist Richard Laermer told TechNewsWorld that his eyes hurt just thinking about the idea.
Not so, maintained Tobii’s Hyleen. “Most users adopt to eye control very quickly.”
You don’t have to do anything besides look, she pointed out, so it’s “not very different from what you already do when sitting in front of a computer screen. Also in this sense, it is truly relaxing.”

GOOGLE FIBER-A DIFFERENT KIND OF INTERNET

Google Fiber is a project which uses fiber optic communication for broad band network and which offers an amazing speed of 1000 Mbps, almost 100 times faster than todays broad band speed. Google Fiber is both your Internet and TV.It brings together your devices and gives you the freedom to search ,record and save shows.

As many as 500 shows can be stored in full 1080p HD, and several TVs within the home can tune in at the same time. Not surprisingly, there’s also a major mobile component taking advantage of that 1Gbps fiber link, as users will have the option of browsing, sharing and eventually watching live TV directly from tablet apps. The company is also promising an ever-evolving service that includes Google+ video hangouts.
Google said customers who subscribe to the ultra-high speed web connection will no longer need to wait for videos to buffer or websites to load. They will be able to share large files instantaneously and take advantage of advancements in online education and health care that will require the fastest Internet speeds. The overall service will come with 1TB of Google Drive space, although it’s expensive to get started: there’s a $300 “construction fee” (currently being waived) to wire a home for the fiber optics. Google Fiber,” is currently available only to residents of Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., which beat more than 1,100 cities in a competition to be the first to receive Google’s new broadband network.
Google says its high-speed Internet service will cost residents $70 a month or $120 a month for a broadband and TV package, which comes with a Nexus 7 tablet that is used as a TV remote. Even if you don’t want blazing download speeds and a cool tablet for a remote control, you can still get Google Fiber’s basic five-megabit service for $0 per month. Granted, you’ll need to put down a $300 construction free, but after that your Internet connection will be guaranteed free for the next seven years.
It’s not just TV.It’s not just Internet. Its Google Fiber.

Metro Rails In India To Get Nokia’s NFC Ticketing

Nokia India is reportedly in talks with the Indian Metro Rail projects for NFC (Near Field Communication) based ticketing services. Nokia seems to be rolling up its sleeves to make sure NFC gets established in India. The company has partnered with PayMate and leading banks to ensure a smooth rollout. The NFC initiative seems to be a part of Nokia’s long term game plan in India because NFC enabled mobile phones are yet to find their way to Indian users.

NFC technology allows communication between two devices in closer proximity, usually a few centimeters. With the NFC ticketing enabled, user will just be able to tap the phone on the NFC machine to purchase tickets. The process will not only be speedier, but also help cutting down long queues.
